Wildfires in Greece destroy British family's dream home days before move

Rory Clifford and Stephanie Harper saw their decade-long dream of a new life in Greece turn to ash as wildfires ravaged their newly purchased Peloponnese home. The couple, from Britain, had invested more than 300,000 euros in the property, bought in 2023, and were set to move in on August 10, 2026.

Their plans were meticulously laid out: personal belongings were already en route, their eight-year-old twins were enrolled in a local school, and even their three rescue dogs were prepared for the journey. The family had poured their savings, taken out loans, and sold nearly all their assets to fund this move to the Greek countryside.

However, the destructive wildfires swept through the region, obliterating the house and everything inside just days before their arrival. Stephanie Harper, who is pregnant with twins and already has three other children, described the profound emotional toll. "We are a very strong family, but this has broken us. The sadness and the emptiness are unbearable," she told the Mirror. "We didn't just lose the house we built, but all the memories and the life we had created within it."

The family is now temporarily staying in a one-bedroom apartment in Hastings, England, grappling with the immense loss. The Mirror highlighted the significant financial sacrifices made, including over 10,000 pounds spent solely on replacing water pipes to ensure the house's supply.
