Tram Seriously Injures Pedestrian in Helsinki

A serious accident occurred in Helsinki's Oulunkylä district on Saturday afternoon when a tram struck a pedestrian near the station.

The incident, which happened shortly after 2 p.m., resulted in the pedestrian being thrown onto the sidewalk with severe injuries. Fire chief Tapio Tihtonen of the Helsinki rescue department confirmed that the injured individual was being transported to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a crowd, particularly young people, gathered near the Oulunkylä station. Some were reportedly filming the aftermath, while older bystanders urged them to stop. Emergency vehicles arrived shortly before 2:30 p.m.

According to a reporter from Helsingin Sanomat who was present, the tram, line 15, was approaching the station from the direction of Itäkeskus when the collision occurred. The accident caused disruptions to the schedule of tram line 15, with adjustments expected until around 4 p.m., according to HSL's website.
