Travis Head aims to maintain opening spot ahead of busy 12 months

Travis Head is confident he can continue as Australia's opening batsman, a role he embraced during the Ashes series. He hit three centuries as an opener against England, a move that proved highly successful and even earned the nickname "Travball." Head, a two-time Allan Border Medal winner, believes his positive mindset and adaptability will serve him well in the opening position.

Ahead of Australia's upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh in Darwin, Head addressed questions about the longevity of his switch to the top of the order. He suggested that his success in the Ashes was not a short-term fix but a sustainable strategy for the more than 20 Tests Australia is scheduled to play over the next year.

I feel like I have been adaptable in the places that I have played. In India and England I have opened the batting, which is a slightly different to Australia. Everything is going to be different, but what I have been able to do over my career is problem solve the best that I can and work through challenges, whether they are green wickets or flat wickets.

While his Ashes success came on home soil, Head acknowledged the need to perform across diverse conditions in upcoming series in Australia, South Africa, England, and India. He expressed no concern about playing in different environments, stating his career has been marked by problem-solving and adapting to challenges on various types of wickets. "Everything is going to be different, but what I have been able to do over my career is problem solve the best that I can and work through challenges, whether they are green wickets or flat wickets," Head said.

Head anticipates that his opening partnership with Jake Weatherald will continue to develop. He is looking forward to the new challenges presented by the upcoming series and is determined to maintain his form and contribute consistently. "If I have done it for [another] 20 Tests and I am sitting there in a few years and I have opened the batting the whole time … I would have done an OK job and been consistent, contributed and had a good partnership with Jake [Weatherald]," he said.
