Truck falls into river in Grand Kasaï, leaving one dead and several missing

Rescue operations are ongoing after a truck carrying passengers and merchandise plunged into the Kaluebo River on National Road No. 1, near the border of Kasaï and Kasaï-Central provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The accident, which occurred Saturday, August 8, has resulted in at least one confirmed fatality, several injuries, and an estimated ten people missing. The provisional toll is still being updated as search efforts continue.

Local sources indicate the truck was en route from Tshikapa to Kananga when it veered off the road and fell into the river. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Among the victims is the truck's manager, who sustained severe injuries and died after being evacuated to a local health facility. Other injured passengers are receiving care in nearby health centers. Authorities and rescue teams remain mobilized to assist victims and their families.

The accident has brought renewed attention to the precarious state of the Kaluebo River crossing. Two bridges stand side-by-side at the site. The older bridge, frequently used by travelers on the RN1, is widely criticized by residents and transporters for its poor condition and lack of safety. Meanwhile, a new bridge, constructed just meters away, has yet to be opened to traffic, causing confusion and frustration among locals and users of this vital transport artery connecting several provinces.
