Truck loses brakes, causes pile-up, and crashes into two homes

A truck lost its brakes on the CA-2 highway in Guatemala, resulting in a serious accident that injured four people and damaged property. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the El Xab village, El Asintal municipality, Retalhuleu.

Video surveillance captured the moment the heavy vehicle, traveling from Ciudad Hidalgo towards Cobán, lost control while descending a stretch of the road. The truck first struck a beverage delivery truck, then a bus heading towards the Mexican border, before crashing into two houses situated along the roadside. The driver of the truck was identified as Rafael Mendoza.

The truck ended up embedded in two houses after losing its brakes on the CA-2 route, in the village of El Xab, El Asintal, Retalhuleu.

Emergency services, including the Guatemalan Red Cross and Departmental Volunteer Firefighters, responded to the scene. The bus driver became trapped in his cabin and required rescue equipment for extrication before being transported to a medical center. Pre-hospital care was also provided to Antonio Rafael Escobar, 53, and Marvin López, 26, the driver and custodian of the beverage truck, respectively, as well as the truck driver.

Passengers on the bus were evaluated at the scene and did not sustain serious injuries, according to Marvin Morales, a Guatemalan Red Cross rescuer. Authorities confirmed there were no fatalities. The surveillance footage will be part of the investigation to establish the accident's causes and assign responsibility. The accident caused significant traffic disruptions on the CA-2 route while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
