Trump Administration Cuts Funding for Transgender Youth Healthcare

The U.S. government will cease funding gender-affirming surgeries and hormone treatments for transgender children and adolescents through its public healthcare systems, Medicare and Medicaid. This directive comes from President Donald Trump and is set to take effect on October 13.

Mehmet Oz, head of Medicare and Medicaid, stated that most other medical treatments will also no longer be supported. However, treatments for mental health issues are explicitly excluded from this new policy. The decision impacts a significant portion of healthcare funding for many clinics, as these government programs represent a substantial part of their revenue.

While Medicaid is designed for low-income individuals and Medicare serves seniors and people with disabilities, the cost-sharing between the federal government and states for Medicaid means that state funds are not directly affected. Nevertheless, numerous Republican-dominated states had already implemented significant restrictions on such treatments prior to this federal change, making it difficult to quantify the exact number of children and adolescents impacted.

Trump controversially stated, "We will protect America's children," while criticizing Democrats for allowing minors to undergo gender-affirming surgeries.

Critics accuse Trump and his Republican allies of fueling a "culture war" through the restriction of minority rights and the use of aggressive, discriminatory language. Conversely, the political right accuses liberal circles of being "woke," meaning ideologically blinded and politically overly correct. This move is seen by many as part of a broader political strategy to mobilize conservative voters.
