Trump administration hints at Kennedy Center demolition over renovation dispute

The Trump administration has raised the possibility of demolishing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington if legal challenges prevent its planned extensive renovation. This unusual warning was issued in a Justice Department document opposing efforts by Democrats to halt the two-year renovation project and block the building from being named after President Donald Trump.

The document does not explicitly state a plan to demolish the complex. However, it argues that without Trump's renovation and fundraising initiatives, the center would become increasingly unsafe, eventually necessitating its demolition. "Without these efforts, the center will continue to decay and become an unsafe, dilapidated structure that will have to be demolished," wrote Justice Department lawyer Brantley Mayers.

Mayers suggested that a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River could be built in its place. He acknowledged this would be "insufficiently honor" the memory of President John F. Kennedy but would be cheaper to build and maintain. This threat of demolition marks an escalating battle over one of the United States' most prominent cultural institutions.

The Justice Department's filing describes the center as having "structural deficiencies, is fundamentally unsafe, and is an embarrassment to the nation's capital." It portrays Trump as the sole individual capable of saving it. Administration lawyers claim they have secured $258 million from Congress for restoration and attracted new donors, arguing that renaming the center after Trump is essential to retain their support.

The Kennedy Center board, selected by Trump, recently voted to add the words "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump" beneath the institution's name and rename the surrounding plaza "President Donald J. Trump Square." Congresswoman and board member Joyce Beatty has taken legal action to challenge Trump's renaming efforts, asserting that only Congress can name the institution, established as a "living memorial" to President John F. Kennedy. A federal judge previously agreed that the board could not simply rename the center and ordered the removal of previously installed signs bearing Trump's name. The administration has filed an appeal.
