Trump attacks D.C. mayor candidate: 'We will not allow the city to be destroyed by a communist'

Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Janice Lewis George, the frontrunner to become the next mayor of Washington D.C. Trump labeled George a "communist" and warned she would "destroy" the capital if elected. The former president, who has plans for several projects in the U.S. capital, stated he wants to leave his mark on the city.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump asserted that George, who he claims wants to empty prisons and oppose ICE, would welcome "criminal illegal aliens" back to the capital. He declared, "Many people, including myself, have worked for a long time and hard… we will not allow the city to be destroyed by a communist who has no intention of restoring Washington to its greatness!" He emphasized the last sentence in all caps, a characteristic of his online posts.

Janice Lewis George, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) affiliated with the Democratic Party, secured victory in the opposition party's primary in mid-June. She is widely expected to win the November election, as Democrats consistently hold a significant majority in the U.S. capital.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to place Washington D.C., which has a special status, under federal control upon his return to the White House. He has also promoted projects he is advancing in the city, such as the restoration of "73 statues, monuments, and fountains," according to another post on his social media platform. He also mentioned his visit to the East Potomac Golf Links, which he described as "dilapidated, dry, neglected, and dangerous," vowing to transform it into "one of the greatest golf courses in the world."
