Trump Backs FIFA Chief Infantino for UN Secretary-General Role

Donald Trump has expressed a desire for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next United Nations Secretary-General, according to a source close to the former U.S. president cited by the New York Post. Trump reportedly sees Infantino as a globally respected leader capable of uniting nations. However, it is not clear if Infantino is interested in the role or if Trump has formally proposed it to him.

Incumbent UN Secretary-General António Guterres will conclude his second term on December 31. The selection process requires approval from the 15-member UN Security Council. Trump's reported interest comes after he and Infantino appeared together at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, where Infantino had previously presented Trump with FIFA's "Peace Prize."

Infantino's leadership has not been without controversy. He faced criticism regarding high ticket prices and the expanded 48-team format of the World Cup. Tensions flared when Trump allegedly pressured Infantino to overturn a red card for American player Folarin Balogun.
