Trump claims credit for US getting 50% of profits from new Canada bridge

President Donald Trump claimed credit for renegotiating the Gordie Howe International Bridge deal, asserting that the United States will now receive 50% of its profits. Trump announced the change on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating the original agreement was poorly negotiated by a previous administration.

The original deal on the bridge, which was poorly negotiated by a previous Administration, is no longer in effect. We have modified the terms of the agreement so that the United States now gets 50% of the profits.

Canada, however, canceled the bridge's joint inauguration ceremony, scheduled for July 27, following Trump's threat of a 50% tariff on most Canadian products. A spokesperson for Canada's Infrastructure Minister cited the U.S. trade threats as making a joint celebration inappropriate.

Given the threats of trade measures by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebration between the two countries.

Trump also commented that Canada's withdrawal from the invitation was understandable given the tariffs. The 2.4-kilometer bridge connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, and is named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe. The inauguration had previously been postponed in June due to unresolved issues between the two countries.
