Trump counters Iran's reparations demand, says U.S. will seek payment too

President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric against Iran, announcing his intention to demand reparations from the country. This move directly counters Iran's demand for compensation for war damages as a condition for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump took to social media to declare, "I, too, will demand reparations from Iran." He instructed his negotiators to ensure this demand is part of all future discussions. This marks a shift from his previous, more subdued response to Iran's demands.

The U.S. president cited a long list of grievances, including alleged Iranian responsibility for deaths and injuries in past conflicts, the killing of U.S. personnel on the USS Cole, and the deaths of "hundreds of thousands of innocent protesters" over the past 50 years. He also mentioned the 52,000 deaths in the last five months and damages inflicted in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza.

Iran has presented a six-point condition for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which includes an end to U.S. threats, a permanent end to the war against Iran and its allies, the lifting of naval blockades, the withdrawal of U.S. troops, full reparations for war damages, and the release of frozen assets. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the U.S. accepts these terms, suggesting a continued stalemate in negotiations.
