Trump laments China-Nepal flood devastation, pledges US aid

Devastating flash floods erupted on the China-Tibet and Nepal border on August 26, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting international concern. The disaster has claimed at least 500 lives, with over a thousand people still missing, highlighting the severe impact of the event.

U.S. President Donald Trump described the flood's intensity as "shocking," noting that even intact buildings could not withstand its force. He pledged that the United States is mobilizing aid and communicating with leaders to ensure they receive everything they need. The scale of the disaster has spurred offers of assistance from numerous countries, including China, India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

However, Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that foreign rescue teams are not currently needed, as Nepalese security forces are actively engaged in search and rescue operations. Despite this, the need for aid is immense, with the Red Cross estimating that at least 93,000 people are directly affected and in urgent need of assistance. There is also a warning of a potential second wave of flooding.

Among the missing are over 500 foreign nationals. Nepal's tourism board reported that at least 121 foreigners, including individuals from India, China, and South Korea, have been rescued. The disaster underscores the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events and the complex coordination required for international disaster response.
