Trump orders Lake Ontario renamed 'America Lake'

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario to "America Lake," with the change taking immediate effect. The directive comes amidst a significant escalation in trade tensions between the United States and Canada.

This move follows the collapse of over a year of trade negotiations between the two North American nations. Following the breakdown, the U.S. imposed substantial tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting retaliatory tariffs from Canada.

Earlier in the week, Trump had publicly floated the idea of renaming the border lake, citing the diminishing trade relationship. He stated that the U.S. was "seriously considering" renaming the lake "America Lake," suggesting that the U.S. would soon not be trading with "Ontario" much anyway.

Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes, straddling the border between the U.S. state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. Its shores are home to Toronto, Canada's largest city. The lake's current name originates from a word in the Huron-Iroquois language meaning "beautiful water."
