Trump's former lawyer confirmed as US Attorney General amid concerns

Todd Blanche, who previously served as Donald Trump's personal attorney, has officially been confirmed as the United States Attorney General. The Senate approved his nomination with a razor-thin margin of 50 votes to 49, following significant debate and opposition from Democrats.

Two Republican senators, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, broke ranks with their party to vote against Blanche's confirmation. This bipartisan opposition highlights the contentious nature of his appointment and the concerns raised about his potential impact on the Justice Department.

Democrats have voiced strong objections, accusing Trump of attempting to weaponize the Justice Department for political purposes. Senator Dick Durbin, a leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, stated that the Attorney General should represent the people, not act as the president's personal lawyer. He expressed concern that Blanche would continue to treat the department as a law firm serving a single client: the president.

One of the key obstacles to Blanche's confirmation was his proposal to establish a $1.8 billion fund for individuals Trump considers victims of judicial persecution. This fund was widely expected to include supporters of Trump who participated in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Additionally, a controversial proposal granting Trump immunity from tax audits added to the opposition.

Blanche managed to secure enough support for confirmation by issuing a written order to eliminate the proposed fund aimed at combating the "political instrumentalization" of justice. He also clarified that the agreement regarding tax audits would be rescinded. Despite these concessions, the debate underscores ongoing tensions regarding the independence of the Justice Department and its relationship with the executive branch.
