Trump says he never cared about regime change in Iran

Former U.S. President Donald Trump declared that he was never interested in regime change in Iran, although he acknowledged that such changes were occurring.

Speaking to reporters at the G7 summit, Trump said, "I never cared about regime change…but I guess you have regime change in Iran." He made these comments after meeting with Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

This statement appears to diverge from his past actions and rhetoric. In February, following a U.S.-Iran confrontation, Trump urged Iranians to reclaim their nation, writing on Truth Social that it was their "greatest opportunity to take back their country."

During his presidency, the Trump administration frequently suggested that the elimination of several high-ranking Iranian officials had effectively led to a shift in the country's leadership. Trump also noted that members of the "first" and "second" tiers of Iranian leadership were deceased, along with some from the "third tier." He characterized the current U.S. negotiating partners as rational and eager to assist their country, stating, "We’re talking to very rational people."
