Trump says Israel is 'reallocating' in Lebanon after opening fire in withdrawal zone

President Donald Trump asserted that Israeli forces are actively withdrawing from occupied territories in southern Lebanon, despite a recent incident where Israeli troops opened fire near a Lebanese Army unit in a "pilot zone." Trump described the withdrawal as "well underway" and characterized the agreement between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the U.S., as "an excellent deal."

During a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Trump addressed the situation, noting that Israeli units are "reallocating other units" and "getting along very well" with the Lebanese Army. The U.S. State Department had previously confirmed that the withdrawal had begun in three specific locations: Froun, Srifa, and Zawtar al-Gharbiya.

However, the recent firing incident in Zawtar al-Gharbiya, which occurred near a Lebanese Army unit, prompted Trump to state, "I just found out about that right before this meeting, so we will look into it." He also discussed U.S. plans to support the Lebanese Army in securing these pilot zones against the Shiite group Hezbollah, mentioning that these plans include assistance from other parties and that the Lebanese Army is also increasing its self-sufficiency.

The agreement, signed on June 26 in Washington, aims to facilitate the transition of military control from Israel to Beirut in these designated zones. The U.S. has pledged support to ensure the Lebanese Army can maintain control amidst ongoing tensions with Hezbollah.
