Trump seeks Iran sanctions added to Russia bill

U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Congress to expand a sanctions bill against Russia to include measures targeting Iran. Trump expressed his desire for this addition on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, "Republicans should add Iran to the Russia sanctions bill. Lindsey just wanted this and it was supposed to happen. IMPORTANT!!!"

This statement refers to a sanctions bill against Russia, which was being developed by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Shortly before his death last week, Graham had announced reaching an agreement with the White House, which had previously blocked his initiative for over a year, regarding support for his bill.

Following Graham's death, Trump indicated he had heard that sanctions against Iran would be incorporated into the Russia sanctions package. However, the newly published text of the bill does not include such provisions. A source within Congress involved in the bill's development told PAP that lawmakers from both parties did not intend to include sanctions against Iran.

A Democratic Party-affiliated source expressed concern that this move might be an attempt to sabotage the bill. The current draft of the bill includes sanctions against Russia's shadow fleet, energy and financial sector companies, and provisions for imposing tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that purchase significant amounts of oil and natural gas from Russia. Earlier, in May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a similar bill, but it omitted the tariff provisions and included measures for loans to Ukraine for military equipment purchases.
