Trump signs orders limiting birthright citizenship

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders designed to limit the scope of birthright citizenship, a principle enshrined in the 14th Amendment. These new measures aim to prevent certain categories of children born on American soil from automatically acquiring U.S. citizenship.

The first executive order identifies specific groups of foreigners whose children, even if born in the United States, would not be eligible for citizenship by birth. This includes children of foreign government officials, children whose parents have used "fraud" to gain citizenship, and children of individuals classified as "alien enemies."

The second order directly addresses "birth tourism." This practice involves pregnant women traveling to the U.S. with the intention of giving birth there, thereby securing American citizenship for their child. Trump commented that the practice, which he believes has become a business, was initially intended for the children of slaves after the Civil War.

These actions follow a previous attempt by Trump to restrict birthright citizenship, which was blocked by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2026. The two new executive orders differ from the previously blocked measure, suggesting a new legal strategy to achieve the administration's immigration policy goals.
