U.S. President Donald Trump used his address at the traditional White House Correspondents' Association Gala Dinner to deliver a mixed message of praise and criticism towards the media. While acknowledging the press's work at times, Trump predominantly focused on accusing news outlets of spreading "fake news" and suggested their financial success is directly tied to his presidency.

Speaking to assembled journalists and dignitaries in Washington, Trump declared, "If I'm gone, you're all broke." He argued that the business model of U.S. media companies would ultimately collapse without the constant headlines he generates. The president contended that the press is fortunate to have him, as he provides the material that drives their coverage and, consequently, their revenue.

Trump, known for his often sharp critiques of the U.S. media, has frequently engaged in legal battles against reporting he deems unfavorable. Despite his criticisms, he added that the media "are very dear to my heart," a statement that contrasted with his earlier barbs.

The gala itself was conducted under significantly increased security measures. It served as a make-up date for the original event, which was aborted a quarter earlier due to a security breach involving a gunman. The incident led to shots being fired, though the assailant did not reach the ballroom where Trump and other high-ranking officials were seated. The interrupted dinner was subsequently rescheduled and relocated.
