Tunisia: Mineral water producers explain market tensions amid shortages

Bottled mineral water supplies in Tunisia are facing temporary shortages, a situation the National Chamber of Non-Alcoholic Beverage Industries attributes to a confluence of factors. The primary drivers identified are exceptionally high temperatures, which have significantly boosted demand, and recurring electricity disruptions affecting production facilities.

Producers explain that demand during peak periods has surpassed usual summer consumption levels, depleting safety stocks. Compounding these issues, frequent power outages in various regions have hampered the normal operation of production units. Some facilities experienced shutdowns, requiring technical interventions and maintenance before resuming normal output.

Despite these challenges, the chamber assures consumers that the supply chain remains operational. All 31 mineral water production units across the country are functioning at their maximum possible capacity. Daily production is directly supplying the market, while affected units are gradually returning to normal operations, adhering strictly to quality and safety standards.

The chamber firmly denies any intention to create a shortage, withhold products, or engage in speculation. It highlights the sector's competitive nature, with 31 diverse production units and no single company controlling more than 25% of the market share. This structure prevents any single actor from dictating market supply or delivery pace. Producers are coordinating with the Ministry of Commerce and Export Development to ensure consistent supply.
