Turkey’s hunger and poverty thresholds rise in August, TÜRK-İŞ says

The monthly income needed by a four-person family in Turkey to meet its basic needs exceeded 120,000 Turkish lira again in August, according to TÜRK-İŞ.

The labor confederation’s latest survey put the hunger threshold at 37,388 lira. The measure covers the monthly food spending required for a family of four to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. It stood at 36,940 lira in July, meaning the threshold increased by 448 lira in a month.

TÜRK-İŞ calculated the poverty threshold at 121,786 lira in August, compared with 120,325 lira the previous month. The figure rose by 1,461 lira. Unlike the hunger threshold, it covers the full set of basic household expenses, including rent, transportation, education and healthcare.

The figures show the continued rise in the cost of supporting a family as household budgets face pressure from high inflation. TÜRK-İŞ defines the poverty threshold as the monthly income a four-person household needs to cover all of these essential expenses.
