Turkey's RTÜK launches probe into Sözcü TV over remarks on Syrian rebel leader

Turkey's media regulator, RTÜK, has initiated an investigation into Sözcü TV following controversial remarks made by journalist Serap Belovacıklı. During her program 'Haber Saati,' Belovacıklı commented on Ahmet Şara, the leader of the Syrian rebel group HTŞ, stating, "This nation does not consist of people who applaud a murderer when you dress them in a tie and make them president." She added, "You cannot command respect for two terrorists just because they wear a tie."

RTÜK's statement asserted that Belovacıklı's comments were "incompatible with the foreign policy vision and diplomatic doctrine of the Republic of Turkey." The regulator emphasized that the remarks could harm good neighborly relations. The investigation is being conducted by RTÜK monitoring experts in accordance with the relevant broadcasting principles outlined in Law No. 6112.

The regulator's announcement, made public with "respect to the public," signals a strict stance against content perceived to undermine Turkey's official foreign policy positions, particularly concerning regional conflicts and diplomatic engagements.
