Turkish Governor Removed After Cycling Shorts Controversy

Ardahan Governor Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli has been removed from his position following a presidential decree, ending his tenure in the northeastern Turkish province. The governor's removal comes after a controversy erupted regarding his attire while cycling.

Çiçekli had become the subject of public and political scrutiny after photos emerged of him wearing cycling shorts, or tights, during a bike ride. The issue escalated to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, where a main opposition party's lawmaker criticized the governor's choice of clothing, calling it inappropriate for a public official.

During a farewell ceremony held at the Governorship, Çiçekli expressed his gratitude to those who supported him. He spoke emotionally about his time in Ardahan, emphasizing his commitment to serving the city with passion and integrity. He thanked local officials and citizens for their cooperation and support throughout his term.

As Governor Çiçekli departed Ardahan, he was accompanied by a group of cyclists, a gesture that seemed to acknowledge the very activity that had drawn controversy. His replacement has been announced as Ömer Hilmi Yamlı, the district governor of Şehitkamil in Gaziantep.
