Turkish party leader criticizes rival's stance on state funding for new parties

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has drawn criticism for his remarks regarding state Treasury aid allocated to the Republican People's Party (CHP). Bahçeli suggested that if new parties emerge from defecting CHP lawmakers in 2026, the Treasury aid should be proportionally shared with these new entities.

Müslim Sarı, spokesperson for the CHP under Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, responded sharply on social media, questioning Bahçeli's "ethical" stance. Sarı pointedly asked why Bahçeli did not advocate for a similar distribution of funds during the formation of the İYİ Party, implying a selective application of principles.

"One must ask himself: Why did you not express the same 'ethical' approach during the founding process of the İYİ Party?" Sarı posted, directly challenging Bahçeli's motives. He further questioned if Bahçeli's current stance was an attempt to support individuals attempting to divide the CHP amidst their alleged financial difficulties.

The controversy stems from reports that CHP leader Özgür Özel announced the formation of a new party. Speculation suggests that around 90 CHP lawmakers might resign to join this new party, potentially positioning it as the main opposition force in the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Bahçeli's comments appear to be a strategic intervention in this unfolding political scenario.
