Turkish rock star Haluk Levent arrested amid corruption probe

Turkish police have arrested renowned rock star and humanitarian Haluk Levent, a prominent figure in civil society and founder of the AHBAP non-governmental organization. AHBAP gained significant recognition for its support of victims of the devastating 2023 earthquake in southeastern Turkey, which claimed over 53,000 lives.

The arrest warrant was issued by the Istanbul prosecutor's office as part of an investigation into alleged corruption within AHBAP. Turkish media outlets, including BirGun and Sozcu, reported that the 57-year-old musician was apprehended by financial police in Bursa, northwestern Turkey.

Levent faces serious charges, including violating laws on association formation, money laundering, and participating in a criminal organization. He is known for his unique style of Anatolian rock, blending Turkish folk traditions with Western rock music, and for his extensive humanitarian efforts.

Founded in 2017, AHBAP has established a wide network of volunteers across Turkey. The organization's swift and substantial aid to earthquake survivors significantly boosted its profile. Levent is expected to be brought before a judge in Istanbul at an unspecified date.
