Tusk Calls Zondacrypto Scandal 'Biggest in Polish Political History,' Vows Action

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has strongly condemned the unfolding Zondacrypto scandal, suggesting it could be the most significant corruption case in Poland's political history. Speaking before a government session, Tusk stated that the case extends beyond simple bribery, pointing to a "well-organized mechanism" involving individuals previously linked to other problematic situations.

The Zondacrypto affair looks like the biggest affair in the history of Polish politics.

"This is deadly serious," Tusk declared, emphasizing that the gravity of the situation is amplified by a reported death connected to Zondacrypto, in addition to the financial irregularities. He dismissed any claims of exaggeration, asserting that the government had been cautious in its previous disclosures about the matter. The Prime Minister indicated that further "unpleasant things" are likely to be uncovered as the investigation progresses.

Tusk drew clear links between the Zondacrypto business and the Law and Justice (PiS) party, alleging "very strong ties" and "suspicious money flows" between the cryptocurrency operation, PiS-affiliated media, and leading PiS politicians. He suggested these connections are becoming increasingly evident and alarming.

There is no doubt today that this grim business was very strongly linked to the entire PiS environment.

While assuring that the government would not interfere with ongoing police and prosecutor investigations, Tusk announced legislative action. He plans to propose in parliament a reconsideration of the presidential veto on a bill regulating the cryptocurrency market. "Nobody will have the audacity to say that there is no case or that we have plenty of time," Tusk stated, highlighting the urgent need for clear regulations in the wake of the scandal. He also directly appealed to President Andrzej Duda, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, and former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, urging them not to dismiss the issue lightly.

We will not interfere with the work of the police and prosecution, but in parliament, I will propose to vote again on the veto of the president regarding cryptocurrencies.
