Tuvalu Boxer Wins Historic Commonwealth Medal Without a Win

In a remarkable turn of events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Tuvalu's Tarona Taafaki secured a historic bronze medal in the women's 75kg boxing division. This achievement is particularly unique as Taafaki earned the medal without winning a single bout.

I am very proud and happy to represent my country on this big stage. Probably 95 percent of the audience doesn't know where my country is, so I feel very privileged to represent Tuvalu.

The 20-year-old Taafaki was one of five competitors in her weight class. Due to the limited number of participants, she received a bye to the semifinals. There, she lost a unanimous decision to India's Lovlina Borgohain. In boxing, two bronze medals are typically awarded, one to each semifinal loser, meaning one participant in a five-person field would go medal-less.

For the people of Tuvalu, this medal means everything. We are one of the smallest countries in the world, so such a medal is very significant. We have worked so hard to get here. For me as a coach, this is a stepping stone.

Taafaki expressed immense pride in representing her nation on such a large stage. Her father and coach, Badi Taafaki, highlighted the medal's profound significance for Tuvalu, one of the world's smallest countries. He noted that the achievement serves as a stepping stone and a way to draw global attention to the nation's challenges, particularly the threat of rising sea levels due to climate change. Badi Taafaki also mentioned that boxing training in Tuvalu often takes place on the runway of the local airport due to a lack of suitable facilities.

If we win medals, more people around the world will recognize Tuvalu and start to understand the challenges caused by climate change. It is very real for us.
