TV Review: A Kaleidoscope of Disaster and Lost Trust

The idea sounded promising: travel through Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, and speak with people about the problems shaping their daily lives. The ARD documentary sometimes felt overdue, according to the review.

But the program left the reviewer uneasy. Its ominous title, “Land Under Pressure: 50 Voices from the People,” was only part of the discomfort. Early in the broadcast, a voice-over set out the program’s limits and ambitions: “This film is not about explaining political matters. It is about capturing perceptions, moods and opinions and showing what paths out of the crisis could look like.”

The review argues that the documentary did not ultimately provide those paths. Instead, it offered reasons to fear an electoral disaster. The accompanying description adds that a punk rocker later delivered a forceful statement on the ARD program “Hart aber fair.”
