Two Colombians arrested in Quito operation, 44 kilos of cocaine seized

Ecuador's military announced the arrest of two Colombian citizens in Quito as part of "Operation Luna Blanca," which resulted in the seizure of 44 kilograms of cocaine. The operation, based on military intelligence, took place in the northern Carapungo sector of the capital.

The arrested individuals were identified as Daniel G., known as "Cali," and Yeraldín D., both Colombian nationals allegedly linked to drug trafficking activities and the criminal group Los Lobos. Military intelligence indicated that the property used in the operation served as a storage center for narcotics intended for export to the Netherlands. The drugs were reportedly concealed within shipments of roses.

Ecuadorian authorities estimate that the seizure caused a financial blow of approximately $1.5 million to the criminal organization. The confiscated evidence and the apprehended suspects were handed over to the relevant legal authorities for further proceedings. This operation highlights Ecuador's ongoing role as a transit country for drug trafficking, particularly cocaine destined for European and North American markets.

Ecuador is recognized as the third-largest drug confiscator globally, following Colombia and the United States. Since 2021, the country has seized around 200 tons of drugs annually, reaching a record high of nearly 300 tons in 2024. Its strategic location, bordering the world's top cocaine producers and possessing key ports like Guayaquil, combined with a dollarized economy, has made it a crucial route for international drug smuggling.
