Two cyclists hit by bus in Riga, one dies

A tragic road accident in Riga has resulted in the death of one cyclist and injuries to another. The incident occurred on Friday around 5:30 PM near the Deglava Street overpass when a public transport bus collided with two cyclists.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and tragically, one of the cyclists was pronounced dead. The State Police have confirmed that a criminal investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of road safety concerns in the Riga region. On the day of the accident, nine people were injured in various accidents across the Riga region, with additional casualties reported in Vidzeme, Zemgale, Kurzeme, and Latgale. Among the injured were cyclists, electric scooter riders, and a pedestrian.

Authorities are also addressing other traffic violations, with police apprehending nine drivers for drunk driving on the same day, primarily in Latgale. Seven of these drivers were found to be in a severe state of intoxication, leading to potential vehicle confiscation or forfeiture of its value. Furthermore, 196 speeding tickets were issued across the country, with significant numbers in Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, and Zemgale. Two drivers were cited for aggressive driving, contributing to a total of 474 traffic violation protocols issued by the police that day.
