Two flee as police arrest suspect with pistol in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspect found with a locally fabricated pistol and suspected illicit drugs. The apprehension occurred during a stop-and-search operation on Oshuntokun Avenue, Bodija, in Ibadan.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the incident took place on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Operatives intercepted three individuals on a Bajaj motorcycle. During the operation, two suspects fled on the motorcycle while the third, identified as Hammed Lateef, was arrested.

The Oyo State Police Command has recorded another operational breakthrough in its sustained efforts to curb criminal activities and the proliferation of illegal firearms across the state.

Lateef was apprehended after discarding a bag into a nearby drain. A search of the discarded bag revealed one locally fabricated pistol, a live cartridge, sachets of substances suspected to be Tramadol, and a passport photograph believed to belong to one of the fleeing suspects. The police are actively pursuing the two individuals who escaped.

Commissioner of Police Johnson Adenola reassured residents of the command's dedication to proactive and intelligence-led policing. He urged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to aid their efforts in curbing criminal activities and the proliferation of illegal firearms across the state.

During the search, one of the suspects threw a small bag into a nearby drain, while two others fled the scene with the motorcycle. The third suspect, Hammed Lateef, was arrested.
