Two Killed as Firefighting Helicopters Collide in Mid-Air

Two crew members of a firefighting helicopter have died after their aircraft collided in mid-air over Greece on Sunday. The incident happened as emergency services were intensely battling multiple wildfires that have ravaged large areas of the country. The two Bell helicopters, which were on lease, reportedly collided while conducting aerial firefighting operations in the Psatha area, west of Athens. According to a statement from the fire service, both pilots were transported to the hospital unconscious and later pronounced dead. Television footage captured the moment one helicopter appeared to collide with another before exploding and crashing. A third crew member from one of the helicopters was rescued. Hundreds of firefighters are working to contain the wildfires west of Athens, which have spread across mountainous terrain overnight and are threatening the outskirts of the capital. In response to the tragedy, the fire department has suspended the operations of all Bell helicopters in the region pending further investigation. The two deceased individuals were identified as a Danish national and a Greek citizen, according to a statement from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This incident brings the total fatalities from Greece's wildfires this week to five, following the deaths of three firefighters in Crete and the Peloponnese.
