China Flood Death Toll Rises to 25

The death toll from flash floods in northwestern China has climbed to 25, with 23 people injured, state media reported Sunday, a week after the disaster struck. The floods hit the Shuangshimen area, a popular destination for daily campers, on July 26.

Earlier reports indicated 10 deaths and 23 injuries. The updated casualty figures were announced as China's National Disaster Prevention Commission stated it would oversee an investigation into the incident, according to the Xinhua news agency. Shuangshimen, located in the mountainous southern Gansu province, is known for its natural rock arches, high-altitude grasslands, and mountain streams.

Video footage of the event showed strong currents rushing through a valley containing tents and vehicles. China has been grappling with severe extreme weather this summer, with many areas experiencing floods. In July, storms in Hubei province claimed at least 11 lives, while six people died and 130,000 residents were evacuated in southern Guangxi province after several dams burst due to heavy rainfall. Also in July, a landslide in Dangchang County, southern Gansu province, killed 21 people.
