Two Police Officers Killed, Four Injured in Drug Smuggler Shootout in Southern Thailand

A violent confrontation with a drug smuggling syndicate in Thailand's southern Narathiwat province resulted in the deaths of two police officers and serious injuries to four others. The deadly shootout occurred on a palm oil plantation near Ban Bueng Chalam in the Tak Bai district on Monday morning.

The officers killed were identified as Sergeant Major Amran Ha and Corporal Witthaya Chai Phromkaew. The four injured officers are Sergeant Major Traithos Kulsanthawashiri, Corporal Wannuchit Sae Kho, Lieutenant Kittipong Srikhum, and Corporal Phannakit Sri Nakitja. The incident unfolded at approximately 11:48 AM when the suspects opened fire on the responding police.

Initial information indicates that three of them surrendered to the police. The two suspects who fired the shots managed to escape into the nearby forest, taking firearms with them.

According to a spokesperson for the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), initial information suggests that three of the suspects surrendered to the police. These measures aim to intercept the fleeing suspects and scrutinize individuals and vehicles for any suspicious activity. The operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating drug trafficking and related violence in the region.
