Malaysia's JPJ may halt support for motoring events due to safety concerns

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is considering withdrawing its support for future motoring events if participants persist in ignoring safety protocols and violating traffic laws. JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that the department is taking public complaints seriously concerning the dangerous riding behavior of some participants, which poses a threat to other road users.

While JPJ has historically cooperated with organizers and state governments to facilitate motoring programs, Aedy Fadly emphasized that public safety remains the top priority. He noted the numerous public complaints about participants riding recklessly, inconsiderately, and causing traffic congestion, stating these issues cannot be taken lightly.

This stance follows a recent accident in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, where a 36-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son were involved in a collision with participants of the RXZ Members 8.0 event. The mother sustained severe burns to 60% of her body, and their motorcycle was completely destroyed, while the involved RXZ motorcycle caught fire. JPJ has instructed its enforcement divisions and state offices to increase monitoring and enforcement of motoring events nationwide.

Furthermore, JPJ plans to convene a special engagement session with organizers to issue a clear warning about their responsibilities in ensuring participants adhere to the law. "We will call all organizers of motoring programs and give a clear reminder. If violations continue and participants keep ignoring safety aspects, JPJ will no longer support such programs from being organized," Aedy Fadly stated. He reiterated that JPJ does not oppose motoring events but stressed the need for participants to follow road rules and ensure their vehicles are safe and legally modified. Enforcement actions will proceed without compromise against any participant who breaks regulations or endangers public safety.
