Two Shootings Leave Multiple Dead in Montevideo; Several Arrested

A violent start to the weekend in Montevideo saw multiple homicides, with police investigating two separate shooting incidents on July 18. In the Cordón neighborhood, a 34-year-old man with prior criminal convictions was found with multiple gunshot wounds around 3:18 AM. He was rushed to Hospital Maciel, where he was pronounced dead.

Surveillance footage revealed the victim had an altercation with a man and a woman shortly before the shooting. Both fled the scene on bicycles. Police quickly apprehended a 37-year-old man with three previous convictions and a 31-year-old woman, who had no prior record, in a nearby building. A replica firearm, a long rifle magazine, clothing, and other evidence were confiscated during the arrest.

In a separate incident later that day, two men were killed in the Independencia neighborhood. A 53-year-old man, with no criminal record, died after being taken to Hospital Saint Bois. A second victim, a 33-year-old man with four previous convictions, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. A 18-year-old, also without prior offenses, arrived at the same hospital with a non-life-threatening facial gunshot wound.

At the scene of the second double homicide, investigators found over 25 spent 9mm casings and a car with 14 bullet impacts. Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle used in this attack might be connected to another homicide case from July 3. The investigations into both incidents are ongoing and have been handed over to the homicide departments.
