Two soldiers drown attempting to rescue children at unmonitored South Korean beach

Two soldiers in their 50s have died after attempting to rescue two children who fell into the sea at Hwajinpo Beach in Goseong, Gangwon Province, South Korea. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the two brothers, aged 17 and 14, got into trouble while playing in the water.

Witnesses reported that the boys' father and two soldiers, who were staying at the nearby Hwajinpo Condo, immediately jumped into the water to help. While the father and his sons were successfully brought back to shore, the two soldiers were swept away by the waves. Emergency services rescued them in a state of cardiac arrest and transported them to a hospital, but they could not be revived.

It was later confirmed that the beach where the accident took place, located in front of the Hwajinpo Condo, was not operational this season. The Korean military's welfare facility, Hwajinpo Condo, had decided to suspend beach operations starting in January due to financial and operational efficiency concerns, as well as safety risk management. An announcement on their website stated that "lifeguards are not assigned, so rescue is impossible in case of a water accident," and that "any accident within the beach area is the responsibility of the individual."

The Coast Guard is currently investigating the identities of the deceased soldiers and the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. The tragic event highlights the dangers of swimming at unmonitored beaches, even when rescue attempts are made by brave individuals.
