Two Suspected of Illegal Border Crossing into Finland from Russia

Finnish border authorities have apprehended two individuals suspected of illegally crossing the eastern border from Russia into Finland. The incident occurred on Monday evening near Imatra, a town located on the Finnish-Russian border.

According to the Border Guard, the pair crossed the national border on foot through rugged terrain. They were apprehended in proximity to the border and have subsequently applied for asylum in Finland. Both individuals are suspected of committing a state border crime.

This marks the second suspected instance of a state border crime along the eastern frontier within a brief timeframe. Just over the weekend, the Border Guard reported detaining two other individuals suspected of illegally crossing from Russia into Finland in the Suomussalmi region.

The Southeast Finland border authority has been in contact with its Russian counterpart in Vyborg regarding the latest incident. The repeated suspected illegal crossings highlight ongoing border security challenges in the region.
