Two Victims of KM Nurul Salsa Shipwreck in South Sulawesi Identified

The number of victims from the KM Nurul Salsa shipwreck in the waters of Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi, has been revised to 76 people, down from a previous estimate of 78, according to Basarnas Makassar. The update was provided on Thursday, July 23rd.

The DVI team has received two body bags and conducted identification.

In a significant development, the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team from the South Sulawesi Regional Police's Health Center successfully identified two more bodies. These victims were recovered following the vessel's sinking last week. Head of the Health Center, Kombes Pol M Haris, stated that the identification process, involving a joint DVI team, was completed on Wednesday, July 22nd.

The first identified victim was Hasriyanti, 44, from Selayar Islands Regency, whose remains were matched through dental records, medical data, and personal belongings. The second victim, Bau Intang, 52, also from Selayar Islands Regency, was identified using fingerprint and medical data. With these identifications, 16 out of the 17 individuals initially reported missing have now been accounted for.

Based on the latest verification results, the number of victims of KM Nurul Salsa has changed from the previous 78 to 76 people.

Authorities explained the revision in the total victim count. Through verification and cross-referencing of the passenger manifest with families, the ship operator, and relevant agencies, it was discovered that two names were duplicated in the passenger list, and one person confirmed not to have boarded the ship. Currently, 58 people are reported safe, three have died, and 15 remain missing. The search for the remaining missing individuals is ongoing.

This change occurred because two names were recorded twice in the passenger data, and one name who was previously on the manifest was confirmed not to have departed on KM Nurul Salsa after further investigation.
