Two Wildfires Active in North Macedonia; Over Twenty Extinguished

Skopje, North Macedonia – Firefighters in North Macedonia are actively working to contain two active wildfires that broke out across the country, among a total of 25 registered open-space fires as of Saturday morning. While 22 fires have been successfully extinguished and one brought under control, two continue to burn.

The active blazes are located in Gorno Lisiče, a village within the Aerodrom municipality of Skopje, where low vegetation, wood, and corn crops are alight. The second active fire is situated at a landfill on the outskirts of Kriva Palanka, in the country's northeastern region.

Authorities reported that a fire above the village of Zelenikovo, in the southeastern part of the Skopje basin, has been brought under control. This fire had affected forest areas and low vegetation. The Crisis Management Center of North Macedonia provided the update on the fire situation.

While the exact causes of the fires were not detailed, the ongoing efforts highlight the challenges faced by emergency services during periods of dry conditions, common in the summer months. The focus remains on extinguishing the remaining active fires and preventing further spread.
