Two Women Die in Suspected Drunk Driving Motorcycle Crash in Pingtung; County Intensifies Safety Measures

A tragic motorcycle accident in Pingtung County, Taiwan, has claimed the lives of two young women, prompting authorities to reinforce traffic safety measures. The incident, involving a suspected drunk driving incident, occurred when a 21-year-old woman, identified by her surname Liu, crashed her motorcycle into a guardrail while carrying a passenger. Both sustained fatal injuries.

This fatal crash underscores a worrying trend of increasing motorcycle accident fatalities in Pingtung County, particularly during the summer months which typically see a surge in travel. The county's traffic safety meeting revealed that in June, motorcycles accounted for 75% of fatal accidents, with contributing factors including distracted driving and illegal turns. As of the fourth week of July, 15 fatal accidents had already been recorded, with many occurring during daylight hours and involving motorcycles, elderly individuals, intersection collisions, and single-vehicle crashes.

In response, Pingtung County officials are implementing a multi-faceted approach to enhance road safety. The police department will conduct targeted enforcement against high-risk violations such as drunk driving, distracted driving, and failure to yield. Simultaneously, public works and transportation departments will focus on improving intersection infrastructure and bolstering safety awareness campaigns, especially for the elderly.

August has been designated as "Distracted Driving Prevention Enhancement Month," utilizing short videos to emphasize the severe consequences of inattentive driving. The county government stressed that "life cannot be redone" and is committed to rigorous oversight across engineering, education, enforcement, and regulatory aspects. They urge the public to avoid drunk driving and distractions, emphasizing that a safe return home is the only priority.
