Two Yilan Sanitation Workers Disciplined for DUI and Drug Driving

Two sanitation workers in Nan'ao Township, Yilan County, have been disciplined following separate incidents of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The incidents have sparked local discussion, with some questioning a lapse in oversight.

The first incident involved a 45-year-old worker who was found to be driving a garbage truck with a blood alcohol content of 0.36 mg/L on July 30. He had reportedly consumed alcohol before his shift and subsequently rear-ended a car in Su'ao Township. He faces charges for endangering public safety.

Shortly before that, on July 21, a 50-year-old worker was stopped by police for driving a small truck in the wrong lane during his lunch break. He exhibited signs of impairment, and a saliva test revealed a positive result for methamphetamine. Investigations revealed he had a prior record for methamphetamine use in 2017. He has been charged with endangering public safety and violating drug control laws.

Nan'ao Township's sanitation department head, Su Zhe-yao, stated that both workers have been reassigned and are no longer permitted to drive garbage trucks. Their sanitation bonuses have also been canceled. The 45-year-old worker is now involved in resource recycling and environmental cleanup, while the 50-year-old worker serves as a garbage truck attendant. The township office will convene a performance review committee to determine further disciplinary actions.
