Typhoon Bailu Triggers Fresh Landslides on Taiwan's 301 Rural Road

Residents in Taiwan's Nanzhuang Township, Miaoli County, face ongoing travel disruptions as landslides continue to plague the 301 rural road. The route, crucial for accessing villages like Lushen, Luhu, and Luchang, was already severely damaged by Typhoon Bawei. Now, the recent Typhoon Bailu has exacerbated the situation, causing continuous rockfalls and making the road impassable.

Local officials have posted notices warning the public not to use the road due to the persistent danger of falling rocks. County Councilor Yang Wenchang reported witnessing rocks tumbling down the mountainside on Sunday morning. The Nanzhuang Township Office has advised residents to stay away until the weather improves, at which point they will begin repair work.

This latest round of landslides highlights the vulnerability of the region's infrastructure to severe weather. Previously, County Councilor Chen Pin'an had urged the county government to prioritize reconstruction efforts for the damaged road. Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin had acknowledged the recurring issues with the road, promising to prioritize a temporary access route for farmers and explore options for relocating agricultural activities. However, the heavy rains from Typhoon Bailu have once again demonstrated the challenges in stabilizing the area.
