U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigns

The White House has not denied reports that U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is stepping down, even as it portrayed his tenure as a success.

Deputy White House press secretary Anna Kelly said Driscoll had effectively carried out President Donald Trump’s “Make America Strong Again” agenda at the Army Department. She credited him with distinctive leadership during U.S. military operations, a renewed focus on readiness and combat preparedness, and assistance with Russia-Ukraine negotiations.

“The United States military is more powerful than ever because of his work with the commander in chief and the secretary of war,” Kelly said. The statement came after reports of tension between Driscoll and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

If accepted, Driscoll’s resignation would mark another departure by a senior military leader from Trump’s administration. Driscoll, a military veteran who served in Iraq, was a law-school classmate of Vice President J.D. Vance. He unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2020 and later advised Trump during his 2024 reelection campaign.

Jack Reed, the senior Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he regretted Driscoll’s resignation and assigned responsibility to Hegseth. “I am not pleased by Secretary Driscoll’s resignation. It is long past time for President Trump to recognize the long-term damage Pete Hegseth is doing to the Department of Defense,” Reed said.

The reported resignation could leave the Army without permanent civilian or military leadership as the war with Iran enters its seventh month. Hegseth fired Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George in April and has not appointed a permanent successor.
