U.S. Embassy Celebrates Romanian Language Day With an AI Translation Video

The U.S. Embassy in Bucharest used artificial intelligence to make a cultural point: some Romanian words carry meanings that resist a single-word translation.

In the video released on Aug. 31 for Romanian Language Day, a member of the diplomatic mission asks an AI assistant to describe complex feelings in simple terms. A description of deep, bittersweet nostalgia for a distant place filled with love and hope produces one answer: “dor.”

The assistant gives another compact response when asked to define a state of harmony and peace with the world, combined with comforting warmth and inner calm. “In Romanian, it’s simple: tihnă,” it says. The embassy staff member reacts with surprise, asking whether an entire paragraph has been reduced to five letters.

The Romanian language is part of our being.

A description of deep affection and tenderness for another person brings the word “drag.” Asked to translate the term back into English word for word, the AI refuses, replying: “Some beauties exist only in the Romanian language.”

Romanian Language Day has been observed in Moldova since 1990 and in Romania since 2013. Ukraine will observe it from 2026. Public authorities, Romanian diplomatic missions and cultural institutes may mark the day with educational and cultural programs. Moldova’s President Maia Sandu also said in a Facebook message: “The Romanian language is part of our being.”
