U.S. military strikes Iran in retaliation for downed helicopter

The U.S. military has carried out new airstrikes targeting sites within Iran, actions described by the American Central Command (Centcom) as occurring in "self-defense." This military action is presented as a direct response to the recent downing of a U.S. Army helicopter.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces began launching self-defense strikes against Iran at 5 p.m. ET today at the Commander in Chief’s direction, in response to yesterday’s downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter. The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.

The incident involving the helicopter took place during a patrol mission over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the loss of the advanced Apache helicopter on social media, stating that the United States was "forced to respond" to the attack. Reports indicate the helicopter crashed off the coast of Oman after being hit.

Both crew members were successfully rescued by a U.S. unmanned naval drone and sustained no injuries. This marks the first loss of an Apache helicopter since the conflict between the United States and Iran intensified. The U.S. military's response came shortly after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf publicly cautioned Washington against abandoning its commitments in ongoing diplomatic negotiations. Ghalibaf conveyed that while diplomacy is preferred, Iran is capable of communicating in other "languages" and would do so if obligations were not met.
