Uber Freight Investigating Cyber Incident After Hacker Claims

Uber Freight is currently investigating a data security incident involving unauthorized access to a portion of its systems and repositories. The company confirmed the investigation on Tuesday after a hacking group known as "Helix" claimed on August 6 to have posted nearly one million Uber Freight files on its website.

A spokesperson for Uber Freight, Sam Hallock, stated that the incident "has been identified, contained and remediated," and that the company "promptly engaged federal law enforcement." Hallock assured that there has been "no impact to Uber Freight's business operations, which continue in the normal course without disruption." He added, "Our systems are secure and fully operational."

Hallock declined to comment on the authenticity of the data posted by the hackers, when the company was informed of the breach, or whether Uber Freight interacted with the hackers. Helix is identified by Google Threat Intelligence as one of several names associated with a cluster of high-profile hacking activities targeting major companies.

This incident follows a spate of extortion attempts in recent weeks targeting numerous prominent U.S. businesses and financial institutions. Other companies reportedly targeted in this campaign include Blackstone, Bridgewater Associates, Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, KKR, TPG, CME Group, Clearlake Capital, and Moody's. Levi Strauss also recently acknowledged a data breach affecting its systems.
