UEFA rules create unexpected squad problem for Dinamo Zagreb

Croatian football club Dinamo Zagreb, having secured a strong lead in their Champions League third qualifying round match against Kauno Žalgiris, faces an unexpected challenge stemming from UEFA's stringent player registration rules.

The club is likely to find itself compelled to operate with a reduced squad for upcoming European competitions, regardless of whether they advance to the Champions League playoffs or the Europa League group stage.

The core of the issue lies in UEFA's regulations, which mandate that each team must include at least eight locally trained players on their 'A' list submitted for European tournaments. Locally trained players are defined as those who spent at least three years in the national football system between the ages of 15 and 21. Furthermore, four of these eight players must be club-trained, meaning they must have spent at least three years at the club itself.

Dinamo currently lacks the required number of club-trained players to fill the standard 25-player A-list. For each player short of the club-trained quota, the team's A-list capacity is reduced by one spot. This situation is complicated by Dinamo's ongoing transfer activities, including attempts to sign Russian player Kirill Kravtsov and the search for a new goalkeeper, alongside the recent acquisition of French player Noah Nsoki.

Registering additional players, such as Dani Olmo who is currently recovering from injury, for European competitions would further diminish the number of available slots on the A-list, potentially forcing Dinamo to make difficult decisions about which players to exclude.
