UEFA Stands Firm on FIFA Tournament Boycott Threat Amid Governance Dispute

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is maintaining its threat to boycott FIFA tournaments, even after FIFA President Gianni Infantino abandoned his controversial plans for private investment deals. UEFA issued a statement asserting that it has not yet received sufficient guarantees that such proposals will not resurface in the future. This stance reflects a deep-seated distrust within UEFA regarding FIFA's governance under Infantino.

UEFA's member associations had clearly outlined the conditions required for their continued participation in FIFA tournaments. These included the abandonment of plans to sell stakes in major tournaments and a firm guarantee from FIFA that similar attempts would not be repeated. According to UEFA, these conditions have not been met. The organization explicitly stated that its loss of confidence in Infantino's leadership, declared last Saturday, remains unaltered.

Infantino acknowledged in a letter from FIFA late Wednesday that mistakes were made concerning the controversial plans to sell shares in FIFA tournaments to private investors. This marked his first public apology since presenting and then retracting the investment proposal. FIFA stated in the letter that it sincerely regrets these errors and is committed to ensuring they do not happen again. A review will be conducted, with a report to be presented to the FIFA Council at its next meeting. The letter also reaffirmed the full support of General Secretary Matthias Grafström and the FIFA leadership for Infantino, who has faced significant criticism recently.
