UGM, Indosat, and NVIDIA Launch AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and NVIDIA, has officially opened the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta. This initiative marks a significant step toward building a national AI ecosystem, aiming to position Indonesia not just as a consumer of artificial intelligence but as a hub for innovation and talent development.

Since 2023, UGM has been committed to realizing a smart university through the optimalization of AI utilization in the fields of education, research, and community service. One of these efforts is initiating the development of UGM AI Society.

UGM's Rector, Prof. Ova Emilia, highlighted the university's commitment since 2023 to integrating AI across education, research, and community service. This commitment is embodied in the UGM AI Society, a platform fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. UGM has already undertaken various AI research projects, contributing nationally and internationally, with applications ranging from managing the COVID-19 pandemic and exploring AI ethics to supporting tuberculosis diagnosis and advancing smart agriculture technologies.

The collaboration is expected to yield practical solutions for societal needs, including disaster management applications and AI platforms for data-driven decision-making. A smart agriculture technology integrating IoT, cloud computing, and AI is also part of the development. UGM hopes this center will spur continuous innovation that benefits Indonesia and contributes to global scientific advancement.

Vikram Sinha, CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, sees immense potential for Indonesia to become an AI innovator, suggesting the nation's challenge lies not in a lack of talent but in uneven opportunities for skill development. He stressed that investing in human capital is crucial for AI readiness and that AI's benefits should enhance productivity in sectors like agriculture, education, and healthcare, ultimately reaching the wider community.
